A Hero Lies in Us
It was a tiring day yesterday, after attending the weekly church service and had lunch, I went directly to my friend’s home/studio. After a long lay-off in events photo coverage, I was commissioned to shoot a Debut Party at Paradiso Terrestre in Molino, Bacoor, Cavite. It has been a while since I shoot an event, the last paid gig that I had was a Wedding at Paco Park and that was in August.
The debut party coverage ended at around 11:00PM and I was able to get home just a few minutes past 1:00AM, so tired that I was not able to take shower to freshen up.
As expected, my morning didn’t start right, I wanted too stay in bed for a little while but my body clock worked efficiently and woke me at around 7:00AM.
But my not so good day changed after hearing (or rather reading) something good. I started my day checking my e-mail and browsing my Facebook accounts, then I found out that Efren Peñaflor won the CNN Hero Award for this year besting 9 other candidates from all over the world.
I first saw Efren’s work (mission) in a local program featuring extra-ordinary service to the people in need. Efren and the rest of the Dynamic Teen Company are teaching streets of Cavite City using their “kariton” classrooms. All of these young educators are volunteers, instead of spending their spare time indulging into other activities, they chose to spend time educating these unfortunate kids.
I was amazed upon seeing these sacrifices, these little sacrifices had brought light to the dimming world of the kids that they’ve touched.
It makes me wonder why we are still electing rotten politicians to lead us, if only these people who are promising change would have the heart like Efren Peñaflor and his co-educators at the Dynamic Teen Company, I believe that this nation would regain its greatness.
Each one of us can be heroes, we may not be able to sacrifices our time but being responsible enough to see and be critical of the wrong-doings around us, by renouncing those people who robbed us of our pride of being a Filipino. That maybe a small step, but this step may bring us to our dream of being great again.
