WordPress WordCamp Philippines 2009

I read about the upcoming WordPress WordCamp Philippines 2009 on my Twitter account last month and almost forgot about it until recently when it was announced that registration is now open.

This year’s WordPress WordCamp Philippines will be held at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati City on September 19, 2009. Unlike WordCamp Philippines 2008, this year’s registration is not free, there will be a PhP500 registration fee (freebies and lunch included) for early bird or $12 for online registration and payment using PayPal. Last year’s WordCamp Philippines was a blast, but I’m looking forward is what would happen afterwards, last year’s WordCamp aftermath with fellow SEO.ph members was a drinking spree at Pier One at the San Miguel by the Bay.

My WordPress WordCamp Experience

Yesterday was a historic day for Filipino bloggers especially for WordPress users. The first ever WordPress WordCamp Philippines was held at the Dela Salle – College of St. Benilde in Manila, not only the first WordCamp in the Philippines but in the whole South East Asia.

About 400 WordPress Bloggers attended the event, campers were then divided in different sessions discussing different WordPress related topics.

I attended the Creating a WordPress Themes & CSS Power by Gail Villanueva, WordPress for Corporate Websites by Hans A. Koch & WordPress for SEO also by Hans A. Koch.

After the sessions, camper’s were treated to a hefty lunch courtesy of one of the sponsors, Chowking.

The afternoon session opened with the “State of the Word” talk by Mr. WordPress himself, Matt Mullenweg (nice Nikon D3!), I was overwhelmed by the huge number of WordPress bloggers nowadays, when I started blogging in 2004 (still using b2/cafeblog then), it was very hard to find fellow Pinoy blogger in cyberspace.

After Matt’s talk, series of talks from the WordCamp sponsors followed & prizes we raffled via draw & some games. Then it was time for Matt to answer the questions.

Then it’s time for some picture taking, of course with Matt.

And of course, the loot bag! The WordPress WordCamp bag with NuffNang mug, a Camper’s pass, a CD containing the camp’s documentation, an orange bag from Smart (which I won in a game) and two premiere night tickets for the movie “Righteous Kill” starring Robert De Niro & Al Pacino (another prize from a raffle).

There was a party after the event at the mag:net café in Serendra, The Fort, but opted to go with a long time blogging friend Major & the rest of the SEOPhils boys, we had a chit chat at Pier One at the San Miguel by the Bay at the Mall of Asia.

I’ve been looking for a blogging conference of sort, I was sorry to miss the past gatherings due to the conflict in my work schedule, but this time, I will make my schedule available for the WordCamp Philippines 2008.

I’ve been using the BlueBox theme for quite a long time, I felt the need to use a new theme in time for the new year. I found this new theme suitable to my need, it is called Cutline 3-Column Right, a variation of Chris Pearson’s Cutline Theme.

The 3 column design works perfectly for me, I can now divide my sidebar contents & place my ads in a manner that won’t annoy my viewers (I hope I did the right thing). Also, the theme is white & simple which made it more attractive to me.

Wordpress 2.3.1 (Dexter) Upgrade

It was a great leap for me, I was using 2.2.2 version before I decided to upgrade to 2.3.1 version & I tell you, upgrading was not as easy as it used to be. I don’t know why my upgrade messud-up, it used to be just like a walk in the park. Good thing for me that I always do back-up of my SQL & the whole wp-content on my hard disk before I did the upgrade.

For those who are planning for an upgrade, you might want to consider the following:

Back-up! Back-up! Back-up. Create a back-up of your SQL & files (images, etc..) that are not included in the common wordpress installation kit.
Check if your current theme is compatible with this version, you don’t wanna mess-up your initial run.
Make sure that all the plug-ins installed in your blog are Dexter friendly, 2 of my previous plug-ins f*cked up during the initial run!

You might also consider checking this forum entry, it deals with the “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 80000000 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 253742 bytes)” message that you might encouter after upgrading.

I hope that your upgrade will not be as messy as mine! Happy blogging everyone!

Blue Box Theme

You might have noticed my new theme, yes! I did it again!

I just thought of having a simple theme, the theme is called Blue Box created by Bob, I did some minor modifications on the sidebar & header to fit my taste. The quotation on the header image was quoted from Ansel Adams, probably the best landscape photographer in the whole world, I find it fitting for me since most of the time I intentionally break the basic rules of photography, what are there? I’ll discuss it some other time. The photo is mine, I mean I took that shoot in San Jose, Tarlac during a photo ops EB with fellow PiPhols.

I’m still conceptualizing an original theme, this may take time, but for the time being I hope you like my new look.

Back to Black

Maybe you have noticed a great deal of change in my lay-out, after having a one-column theme for more than a year, I went back to a two-column theme. There are many reasons why I’ve implemented these changes (to many to mention), but the only thing that is sure, I did this for you my avid viewers. hehehehe!

The theme is called Wordpress Black Wolf, courtesy of Amsterdamn.org. Hmmm… Kelan nga ba ako huling gumamit ng black theme? 2 years ago pa yata, anyways I hope na nagustuhan n’yo ang bagong look ng blog ko.

data migration to wordpress ella (v2.1)

i read the announcement about 2 days ago about the new wordpress version (v.2.1). i decided to upgrade since i’ve been using the v2.0.4 & there were series of upgrades that i did not went through.

my previous version was manually installed which makes upgrading a pain in the ass! i thought it’s gonna be easy but i was wrong, a great deal of upgrade was done especially on the database format which made it very hard!

the upgrade is still going on, i hope that you bear with me, the links are yet to be changed.

napagtripan kong ayusin ang theme ng isa ko pang photoblog, i would like to call it: lights, camera in action, base ito sa Day Dream ni Jim Whimpey. mejo may kahirapan dahil wordpress 1.5 ang gamit ng blogsome while daydream was based on wordpress 2.0.+. anyways, ok naman ang resulta, bisitahin n’yo naman ito.
