Ondoy and the common man
I was trapped in the house for 2 day because of typhoon ‘Ondoy’, wala naman akong espesyal na lakad maliban sa naka-schedule na meeting ng high school batch namin. But weekends for me is time to relax and for a while leave the office environment behind me.
My jaw dropped after seeing how enormous Ondoy’s devastation left behind, according the the weather bureau, this was the heaviest rainfall the country ever experienced in 42 year with more than 400 millimeters of rainfall. I saw my mother’s tears falling after seeing the graphic video clips being shown on the news.
But I never felt the real effect until I talked to an actual victim, nakasakay ako sa taxi and for whatever reason, the driver started narrating his personal experience.
Apparently, tinangay ng malakas na agos ng tubig baha ang bahay nila, he together with his mother, his wife and a 3 month old baby are now homeless. The story of how he braved the heavy flow of a neck deep flood water to evacuate his family touched the sensitive part on my being human.
As I watched the news, I saw stories of heroism, bravery and perseverance amongst Filipinos. Typhoons and other disasters might have ruin our lives but it, in some ways brings the best among us.
