Pinoy Power 2

Filipino boxers went 2 out of 3 in yesterday’s boxing match held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Saturday night, tagged as “Pinoy Power 2″, the fight card featured Mark Jason Melligen (Welterweight), Bernabe Concepcion (Featherweight) and Nonito Donaire, Jr.

Nonito ‘the Filipino Flash’ Donaire won via unanimous decision against Rafael ‘El Torito’ Concepcion of Panama taking home the WBA interim super flyweight title. The judges scored the bout 117-111, 115-113, and 116-112 all for the 26 year old Bohol native. Donaire improved his fight record to 22-1, this being his 21st straight victory, Concepcion on the other hand fell to 13-4-1 record.

Meanwhile, Mark Melligen knocked out Ernesto Zepeda of Mexico at the 4th round of the non-title welterweight bout, referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight when the Mexican dropped in the canvass after a blistering attack from Melligen. Zepeda dropped to 39 wins, 13 losses and 4 draws (34KO) fight record while Melligen improved into 16 wins, 1 loss record.

But the rather controversial and comic match was between Bernabe Concepcion and Steven Leuvano of USA for the WBO featherweight title being held by Leuvano, referee Jay Nady disqualified Bernabe Concepcion after the latter punched out Leuvano after the bell rang at the end of the 7th round. The champion fell motionless on the canvass after being hit by a left-right combo from Concepcion.

Coach Freddie Roach argued the matter with Jay Nady but to no avail, despite being knocked out, Steven Leuvano was declared the winner via disqualification and retained his championship belt. What can be more ironic than that?

Leuvano’s win can be partly attributed to his acting ability, I don’t think that the punches were that hard, I think Leuvano saw an opportunity of a stoppage (due to disqualification) and just lied there waiting for Michael Buffer to announce the winner. Be that as it may, Concepcion committed a huge mistake of punching after the bell whether he heard it or not.
