The Flash and the Furious

If I had a chance, I would have watched the game live at the Araneta Coliseum, but it’s not feasible, the actual game was early morning (8AM) and given my distance from the venue, I should leave my house as early as 5AM.

But watching the delayed telecast of the bout at GMA-7 is almost as exciting as watching it live, except for the fact that the result was already posted in the internet. The match was broadcast at around 1PM just about time I arrived home after attending the Sunday Service.

It was the opening round of the Solis-Viloria bout when I turned on the TV. Filipino-American Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria was dominating the defending International Boxing Federation (IBF) light flyweight champion from Mexico, Ulises “Archie” Solis on the early part of the bout. I was thinking that Viloria needs to put Solis into sleep to make his win more credible, I don’t want him his winning be tagged as “home court decision”, besides, very rarely that a challenger winning a decision.

It was a classic exchange of jabs and punching combination until Viloria hits the button with a right hook to face of Solis and sends the defending champion to the canvas just a few seconds left in the 11th round.

The main event was a different story, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. scored 2 knockdowns against the unbeaten Raul “El Cobrito” Martinez on the very first round of the bout. On my personal assessment, Donaire is faster and stronger than Martinez, he was to penetrate the fortress-like defense of the challenger. The match ended with the stoppage at 2:42 mark of the 4th round, Donaire hits Martinez with a strong hook which sends the latter to the floor. The match was ruled as a technical knock out with Donaire retaining the IBO/IBF flyweight belts.

After this victories, all eyes are now focused on the upcoming Pacquiao v.s Hatton match set for May 2, 2009. I already got my ticket for the match, the ticket sells for 400 Pesos at SM Dasmariñas.
